Super Bowl Sunday or Super Sunday Open House?

Did you enjoy the Super Bowl? I hope you did and I hope your team won. I only caught it in snippets, because in this market, if a buyer wants to see a property, Super Bowl or not, I need to have my own game on. So, right before half time, it was time to look at one of only five houses on the market in Hawaii Kai for under $2 million. Frankly, I didn’t expect to see a lot of people attending the open house given the biggest football game of the year, but I was wrong. Talk about a super Sunday Open House – the place was swarming with would-be buyers. Buyers who all want their chance to score a touchdown and buy a house. Buyers who were willing to give up watching the biggest game of the year for their own game – the game of buying real estate.

Good Strategies and Coaching

In this market, you may feel as if you are in a football game. Do you feel as if you’ve been tackled one too many times? Do your offers keep falling short of the goal? Are you discouraged and do you feel like giving up? Buying to today’s market is tough and your feelings are understandable, but you have to be strong and stay strong if you are determined to buy a house. You’ll need some good strategies and some good coaching. You also need a winning attitude and a strong mindset. Hmmmm……sounds like some of the same kind of qualities exhibited today on the field. The same qualities that got the Rams and the Bengals to the Super Bowl in the first place.

Competitors All Around

Fortunately, my buyer client wasn’t put off by all the competitors roaming around. He knows how the game of real estate is played and he has the right attitude. He’s smart, analytical and prepared to sharpen his pencil. He isn’t overly emotional and he’ll use logic to make his decision. Of course, he’s also big picture enough to know that if he wants the property, he needs to make some big concessions and he has to act fast. Jokingly, we both told the Seller’s agent we understand how it works — just write an offer way over the asking price, don’t ask for anything, give the Sellers whatever they want, and throw in your firstborn child just for good measure. She laughed, a little too knowingly.

Kidding aside, I know it’s frustrating. I’ve never seen the market this tight. If you’ve been seriously looking for a house for a while, you’re probably feeling a little like the Bengals right now. Tired and defeated.

Dedication and Determination Required

Okay, so maybe purchasing a home isn’t exactly like playing football or being in the Super Bowl, but there are some similarities. Playing football and buying a home both require work, dedication, and a whole lot of determination. Both require patience and perseverance……and practice. You’ll get lots of practice writing all those offers before finally getting across the goal line. But, don’t forget, practice wins games!

So, do you really want to buy a house? If you’re serious about buying a home, be seriously determined. You need to be determined to stay in the game and you need to play to win. If you do, you might just get your Hollywood ending – just like the Los Angeles Rams.
