The Rise of Sunflower Biodiesel Farms in Maui

For many years, Maui has been popularly known as a paradise where one can enjoy getting in touch with nature. With its majestic beaches and breathtaking mountain views, Maui is no doubt one of the best places to connect with Mother Earth.

As if that isn’t enough, a relatively new natural attraction has bloomed in the island. The Pacific Biodiesel Technologies’ experimental sunflower biodiesel farm has rapidly gained attention and is now regarded to be a tourist spot. Not surprising at all, since the site is strategically located near the intersection of Honoapiilani and Kuihelani highways. Despite a huge ‘no trespassing’ sign, people still flock to the site to marvel at the beautiful sunflowers, not bothered by the hazards of the place.

Contrary to what most people think, these sunflower biodiesel farms are indeed working farms, and were not really intended to be tourist attractions. In an interview of the owner to the Maui News, they said they were happy to share the beauty of the farm to everyone who appreciated it, but also wanted to reiterate the fact that these flowers aren’t supposed to be cut and taken as souvenirs.

The sunflowers we all marvel about are being experimented on biofuel production. They are grown naturally, which means they do not use pesticides or any other harmful chemicals. With 115 acres of sunflower cultivation, this biodiesel farm is believed to produce 100 gallons of oil per acre.

Though expected to still attract a high number of visitors, farm owners are trying to figure out ways to control the crowd and still be able to entertain them without compromising the sunflowers and the biodiesel production. This newest Maui development is proof of how great the island’s biodiversity is. There is no stopping visitors from seeing the farm, just make sure you exercise discipline and proper precautions since it is a working farm.
