This Big Island retreat was designed with Kona’s balmy climate and great ocean views in mind. Just listed for sale (MLS# 253117), this property would be perfect as a Boutique Surf Inn.
About This Property
This plantation style multi building complex, just off Alii Drive, with 10 suites and a penthouse apartment with ocean views, is a one-of-a-kind tropical fantasy. With its bright colors and tropical Victorian gingerbread, it sits easily among the old cottages along Kahalu’u Beach.
Currently, the suites are rented long term, but as it’s resort zoned, you could rent them instead on a daily or weekly basis to experienced as well as wanna be surfers and snorkelers.
You would think Kona would have lots of places like this, but it just doesn’t. We have some small B&B’s upslope in coffee country’s cooler elevations, and some old 60’s style hotels and condos along the beach, but nothing near as charming or relaxed as this property.
Nestled in a village of small cottages and a couple of surf schools, these two three-story buildings are built for the climate: open and airy to capture breezes off the ocean. The suites have a variety of views, either ocean or of the lush tropical garden which surround the two buildings.
One building has an open atrium with palms rising three stories. The first floor features a large gathering room and would make a great media room. The second story has 4 suites, two ocean view and two garden view, the third is the owner’s penthouse.
The second building has 6 separate suites, each one different, some studios and others one-bedrooms, including one with a kitchen. All have their own private entrance and bathroom. There is a covered BBQ area as well for outdoor dining and an outside shower to rinse off when you return from a day at nearby Kahalu’u Beach.
Terraced gardens and plenty of off street parking fill the rest of the lush lot. I can easily imagine a class on board care in the garage and workshop, watching surf competition videos in the gathering room, and an end of the day beer and steak BBQ in the gazebo.
About Kahalu’u Beach
Kahalu’u Beach, the surf break along with a small church (pictured above) was once the home of King Kalakaua, Hawaii’s Merry Monarch. This beach is famous for its royal history, spectacular snorkeling, and surf break.
In addition to the surf schools, the beach is home to the Keauhou Beach Resort with several restaurants. The hotel hosts a weekly Farmer’s Market, cultural events like the Mango Festival, and daily guided historical tours of the area. Also nearby is Keauhou Shopping Center with a supermarket, movie theaters, galleries, and restaurants.
