Olowalu, Maui Update | Big Developers Withdraw Plans to Build 1,500 Homes
Olowalu Town LLC is being dissolved after they realized their project is not moving forward. Their plans began in 2005 and a lot of money was spent in hopes of creating a community with schools, parks, stores, and around 1,500 new homes. Maybe the real deal killer was trying to relocate the Honoapiilani Highway.
The news that the proposed Olowalu Town development has been withdrawn comes as no surprise. There was a lot of public input and opposition to this controversial project, and when the planning commission rejected the EIS last December, it was pretty much over.

But this is good news for the rest of the Olowalu area, as there will now be a lower density of homes and traffic. Olowalu Mauka is one of the premiere agricultural subdivisions just above the shoreline and the Honoapiilani Highway. It’s a smaller development with only 14 lots with 1-6 acres, still mostly being built out. This is a quality neighborhood that’s really taking shape with some beautiful luxury homes and cottages.
The Olowalu District
The little village of Olowalu is still very vibrant, with a general store, Leoda’s Pie Shop and restaurant, and the fresh fruit juice stand. What a great place to stop and refresh when driving around Maui.

The Olowalu district is characterized by a gentle shore break with an extensive and healthy coral reef just off shore. It’s no wonder that this was once a place of refuge in ancient times, where people could come to feel safe and get back on their feet.
The beaches can be sandy or rocky, with easy access, and the land gradually rises up towards the mountains. This is good farmland that can be very productive. Sandalwood trees used to blanket the slopes here. Situated between Lahaina town and Kahului, it’s an ideal location for a home where you can enjoy sunsets and mild weather year round. If you’re looking to build a Maui home, and maybe do a little farming on your own estate, consider buying a couple of acres in Olowalu Mauka, so you can take advantage of all the great things that Olowalu has to offer. This could be the start of a great thing!
