As of May 1, 2019, Makani Kai offers twice daily round trips between Princeville and Honolulu. With a total travel time of 2 hours (commute + flight) to a neighbor island there and back seems like a short amount of time, right? That’s less than the average driving commute in Los Angeles. And what do most of us hold precious? Our time.
Say you live in Honolulu and want to visit the North Shore of Kauai; by the time you get to the airport, pay for parking, wait in TSA lines, hope and pray your flight arrives on time, and scramble to a car rental counter – 3.5 hours are gone. And that’s just one way!!

I was curious about the new airline, so I reached out to book a ticket; it was fast and easy. Fortunately, I got to experience first-hand flying from Princeville to Honolulu in the 9-passenger Cessna Grand Caravan. Upon arriving, the Princeville Airport was – in a word – streamlined. Passengers are encouraged to arrive only 15 minutes prior to departure. As soon as we landed in Honolulu a crew member asked if we needed a ride to the car rental counter. We were driven privately and arrived only 15 minutes after our flight landed. Then, when it was time to take the rental car back, all we had to do was call Makani Kai and they picked us up! Another perk? The views from the sky!

Spectacular Views
Flying over Kauai is an experience itself. If you haven’t done this – you should add it to your bucket list. Since Makani Kai is stationed out of Princeville, the flight path follows along the North and East Coast shorelines where – on a clear day – you get amazing views of the reefs and the mountains. Who knew there were so many shades of green and blue?
The bottom line is that it’s a quick, easy flight and it seems like such a different experience than the traditional flight experience from Lihue.
Makani Kai is also expected to introduce a Princeville direct flight to Kona flight by July. So, if you’re reading this from the Big Island, start thinking about letting me help you find that Kauai home you’ve always wanted!
