I’ve known Anuhea from Starbucks for many many years, and it’s been a joy to watch her pursue her passion. Anuhea and her husband Brian have been in the food and beverage industry since the early 2000s, and they have always enjoyed creating food and drinks to spread happiness and joy through their creations.
It was through a series of explorations that Anu was led to the fun possibilities of freeze drying. She had the urge to work on some creative new cocktails, and eventually her research led her to freeze drying. Her husband Brian loved to create as well and Anu thought it would be a fun way to add some creativity to his amazing creations. When Anu initially mentioned the idea to Brian, his answer was a quick no. But, after some discussion and persuasion, he decided to give it a try.
Fast forward to 2020 and the family vacation was cancelled due to Covid. Anu’s entrepreneurial side came shining through, and she decided to use some of their trip money to get their first freeze dryer, which, fun fact, she named it Onyx, which is another reason I absolutely adore her. Over time, Brian started taking samples to work to share with his colleagues and their creations were a huge success.
Before they knew it, family, friends and acquaintances were hooked on their goodies, myself included. They started to roll their earnings back in and before they knew it, they had a full blown business on their hands.
Now, their son, Kamaka, helps with picking produce at local farmer’s markets, packing boxes for shipping, and handling general office tasks. Their daughter, Ilyana, assists with labeling bags and gladly “taste tests” every item that comes out of the machines if they let her. They are still working on trying new things all the time so if you have any fun ideas, reach out to them. You just never know.
Next time you are in Kohala, make sure to stop by Mahina Mea and try these unique and tasty treats.

Not to mention they are super light so make great gifts to take when visiting another island or if you are visiting here and only have a little room in your suitcase!
