For many families, the idea of living in Hawaii seems like a distant dream, but the truth is, it can be an awesome reality! Each island offers a unique twist to life in the tropics, from urban city life in Honolulu, Oahu to remote, jungle living in Hana, Maui. We chose Kauai because of its extreme natural beauty and small town community, and I cannot imagine living anywhere else right now!
I came from a large family…9 kids, same mom and dad, still married after 37 years. My siblings and I have always remained close, so when my older brother moved out here almost 2 decades ago, it seemed only natural for more of us to follow.
Today, there are 6 here on Kauai’s north shore, raising our families together, enjoying Hawaii’s family-oriented, small town lifestyle. It takes a village, as they say…and the community here truly embraces the importance of aunties, uncles, and tutu’s, regardless of biological kinship.
Kauai Has a Plethora of Beautiful Beaches
My husband and I are raising 2 small children in Kilauea, Kauai, and we feel so blessed to give our keiki the gift of growing up here on the north shore. We are beach lovers and Kauai has more beaches than any other island.

The plethora of beaches on Kauai offers a variety of playgrounds for kids of different ages and interests. Because my little ones are not able to swim alone yet, we seek out more lagoon style waters, or river edges, that are free from pounding surf. (Next blog coming soon…Kauai’s best beaches!) Camping is always another great adventure to do with the kids, and we have many places here to do just that.
Kauai Offers a Healthy and Active Lifestyle
We tend to rise with the sun and sleep with the sun, as do many people here, and enjoy a natural, rural lifestyle. We play outside as much as possible and our days begin with coffee on the lanai as the kids run around the yard and bring us fragrant plumeria flowers that dropped the night before from our tree.
We can walk to our nearby Kilauea Bakery and order fresh baked treats, or across the street to our favorite health food store with locally grown, organic produce. There are numerous ongoing farmer’s markets in the area. Every day of the week, you could get freshly grown veggies or sample some of the island’s amazing tropical fruit.

There are several playgrounds to choose from, where you will almost certainly run into a neighbor or auntie…or we take bike rides down a bumpy, dirt road to nearby Rock Quarry beach. Some days I never even turn over the engine of my Toyota once, because we can adventure around by foot so easily.

Kauai offers such a vibrant, healthy, and safe lifestyle for children to blossom. There are currently many options for buying land, homes, or condos on Kauai near beaches, as well as homes within walkable, kid-friendly communities.
