Is There a Children’s Hospital in Hawaii?

Are you planning on moving to Hawaii? Do you have concerns about medical care for your children? You are not the first to wonder if Hawaii has a children’s hospital.

To clarify, the answer is yes. Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children (KMCWC) is a 253 bed, not-for-profit teaching hospital located centrally in Honolulu. The staff at KMCWC are well trained and strive to provide exceptional care to Hawaii’s women and children.

They also have the only 24-hour pediatric emergency room, that sees all ages seeking medical care.

Additional specialty services include:

  • Pediatric and neonatal intensive care units
  • Maternal-fetal medical care, including high-risk care
  • In house air transport team

Kapi’olani At a Glance Fact Sheet (2017-2018) reveals the numbers. The hospital admitted 16,008 patients, delivered 6229 babies and saw 45,093 patients in the emergency department. In addition, they are the primary teaching hospital for the John A Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii.

Although KMCWC is located on Oahu, children from all seven islands come to Oahu for specialized care.

How do I know all of this? My two sons were delivered at KMCWC. And, I have been working there since 1993, currently in pediatric sedation. Feel free to call or e-mail me at TinaChorman@hawaiilife.com with your questions about life in Hawaii.
