Honolulu Marathon Info for Kahala Residents /

It’s approaching that time of year again, the Honolulu Marathon. Runners from in-state, mainland, and international locations participate in this massive celebration of personal dedication as all aspiring runners are welcome to participate and there is no time limit! (This year it is on December 9, 2018)

The race starts at 5am from Ala Moana Beach Park amidst fireworks with roughly 30,000 marathoners kicking off their 26.2 mile (42.195 km) journey. Those people staying in the condos/hotels in the vicinity of the starting line may not be able to get a very good night’s sleep…

Due to the logistics of accommodating 30,000 runners through the streets of Honolulu, there will be road closures and lane modifications as noted here, but the gist of it is as follows:

Marathon Route

The Marathon route runs westbound along Ala Moana Boulevard, to Nimitz Highway, right onto Nuuanu Avenue, right onto King Street, right onto Kapiolani Boulevard, right onto Piikoi Street, left onto Ala Moana Boulevard, right onto Kalakaua Avenue, left onto Monsarrat Avenue, right onto Paki Avenue, left onto Diamond Head Road, right onto 18th Avenue, right onto Kilauea Avenue, right onto Waialae Avenue, to the H-1 Freeway (eastbound), to Kalanianaole Highway (all lanes makai/ocean side), left onto Hawaii Kai Drive, right onto Keahole Street, right turn back to Kalanianaole Highway (westbound), left onto Kealaolu Avenue, right onto Kahala Avenue, to Diamond Head Road, left onto Kalakaua Avenue to the Finish Line at Kapiolani Park.

What this means to residents of Kahala is that we are effectively “hemmed in” from roughly 6am until sometime around noon, depending on which way you want to exit the area. (Hunakai Street in the mauka (mountain) direction is the first to become open.)

If you need to leave early during the race, it is recommended that you park your car outside of the “hemmed in” area of Kilauea/Kealaolu/Kahala Avenues the night before, because it is easier for pedestrians dash across a stream of oncoming runners than for cars. If you don’t have anywhere you need to be, grab a mug of coffee (or another beverage of choice) and come out curbside to cheer the runners on! (They really DO appreciate the positive mana!)

The corner of Kilauea Avenue and Kolohala/Onaha Streets usually has a live band playing classic rock tunes, which is quite enjoyable, even if they start while it’s still dark outside.

You can then move down towards Kahala Avenue to catch the runners on their return leg before they approach the long, excruciating slope towards Diamond Head Road known as “Heartbreak Hill.” If you know anyone actually competing, race around Diamond Head in the other direction (counterclockwise) and wait for them at the finish line at Kapiolani Park and give your runner a big hug!

I actually ran it back in 2003 and it was definitely a bucket list item. I now enjoy cheering the runners more than actually running for 4+ hours!

Good luck to all the marathoners, and go get’em!

Marathon Route

The Marathon route runs westbound along Ala Moana Boulevard, to Nimitz Highway, right onto Nuuanu Avenue, right onto King Street, right onto Kapiolani Boulevard, right onto Piikoi Street, left onto Ala Moana Boulevard, right onto Kalakaua Avenue, left onto Monsarrat Avenue, right onto Paki Avenue, left onto Diamond Head Road, right onto 18th Avenue, right onto Kilauea Avenue, right onto Waialae Avenue, to the H-1 Freeway (eastbound), to Kalanianaole Highway (all lanes makai/ocean side), left onto Hawaii Kai Drive, right onto Keahole Street, right turn back to Kalanianaole Highway (westbound), left onto Kealaolu Avenue, right onto Kahala Avenue, to Diamond Head Road, left onto Kalakaua Avenue to the Finish Line at Kapiolani Park.
