There are so many special men and women who serve our country and our community as police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and military, active duty and veterans. It takes a special person to put their own lives in danger to protect and serve other human beings. I feel especially close to this because I have several family members who are police officers and military veterans. Here I’d like to put a spotlight on my beautiful niece, Sheri Taflinger.

Fearlessly Breaking Stereotypes

Many people have a stereotype of what a police officer looks like. My niece Sheri, breaks that stereotype. Not only is she a 16 year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department, she’s also a former Mrs. Hawaii, an incredible mom, talented hula dancer, and co-director of a preliminary pageant to Miss Hawaii. I call her Wonder Woman; she amazes me every day.

Her two children, a boy and a girl, are genius smart and she’s married to another outstanding police officer, Thomas Taflinger, who’s currently a Lieutenant. But what impresses me most about Sheri is that she’s incredibly brave, and utterly fearless. She cares and is passionate about helping people in our community, and it shows in her heart and her chosen profession. She worked in patrol for fifteen years and said she loved interacting with people in the community. Currently she’s a training officer at the HPD Training Academy showing new trainees the ropes and sharing her valuable experience as a patrol officer.

Sheri is an inspiring example of a police officer making a difference in the lives of people in our community, and there are so many more.
