About the (OHCRA) Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Race:

The Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA) is a non-profit organization that perpetuates the legacy of Hawaiian canoe racing. They organize several races each year, including the competitive John D. Kaupiko Regatta which is hosted by the Hui Nalu Canoe Club at the Kane’ohe Marine Corp Base this Sunday on July 14, 2024.

OHCRA’s story traces back to 1952, when visionary leaders in Oahu united to champion canoe racing and preserve the koa tradition. Over the decades, OHCRA has grown into the largest canoe racing association in Hawaii, with over 3,000 paddlers and 18 active member clubs. John D. Regatta honors his contribution to the sport and his vision of inclusivity within the Hawaiian canoe racing community. This regatta is considered one of the last opportunities for crews to score points leading up to the final regatta of the year.

The Hui Nalu Canoe Club is historic club, founded in 1908 by Duke Kahanamoku, is a paddling club focused on canoe racing and cultural preservation. They hold practices throughout the year and participate in regattas during the summer season. They welcome paddlers of all ages and experience levels, offering a great way to connect with the community and enjoy Hawaiian watersports .

If you want to know more about the John D. Kaupiko story and his legacy, feel welcome to reach out Mariliz Reilly. She has been a paddler with Hui Nalo Canoe Club since 1996. MarilizReilly@HawaiiLife.com
