Goodbye Ward Warehouse, Aloha Gateway Towers! – Honolulu, HI

The Ward Warehouse in Honolulu has now been reduced to just a pile of rubble. In a way, we have come to the end of an era. What once was a popular outdoor mall and community gathering place, with local shops and busy restaurants, is no longer here. It’s a sad and an exciting to see, all at the same time. The Ward Warehouse tenants have long relocated, and the mall has actually been closed since mid-2017. It’s just now that the last of the rubble is being cleaned up to make way for a new park and condo development that will also include restaurants and stores. Gateway Towers at Ward Village, along with a park, will occupy most of the new space. Some of the Ward Warehouse store tenants have and will return to set up shop at the now growing and beautiful Ward Village master plan.

Saying Goodbye to an Era

The Ward Warehouse was originally built in 1975, and it has been around for over 40 years. Many remember coming to the stores to buy memorable items, others remember watching dancers practice their routines, while others enjoyed coming to the restaurants to enjoy a good meal, often with a view of the Kewalo Harbor Marina. Those memories will remain forever, but it’s time for new ones to be made.

A New Beginning – Introducing Gateway Towers

Howard Huges, the developer behind Ward Village, will soon transform this pile of rubble into residential buildings and a new community gathering place for Ward Village and Honolulu residents. Gateway Towers, a new luxury condo development will occupy a large part of the existing space. Designed by an acclaimed Architect Richard Meier and partners, Gateway Towers is set to becoming one of the worlds most recognized luxury condominium buildings. Lucky for us, it will be right here in Honolulu.

The Near Future

Gateway Towers is currently selling and is scheduled to be completed in approximately 2.5 years from the time the builder breaks ground on the project. These luxury condos will have a front row unobstructed view of Kewalo Basin Marina, the Ocean, and the Diamond Head crater. With year-round sunshine, the view of the ocean blue will be nothing short of breathtaking. The Cylinder tower of the two tower Gateway Towers project is scheduled to be built first. The Villa tower will follow at a later date in the future.

It’s an exciting time for Honolulu. The changes are being noticed worldwide, and tourists and new residents are coming to paradise to experience the beautiful scenery and mild climate. For those of us lucky enough to call Oahu home, we are grateful for the opportunity to live here year round!
