Golf is No Ordinary Game | Extraordinary Tales by G. Guilford Barton
Hawaii’s Big Island has incredible weather year round and some of the most beautiful golf courses in the Nation, but from time to time cloud cover and rain may put a damper on your activities. If you’re faced with a rainy day averaging 73 degrees that deters you from the golf course, I highly recommend taking a moment to enjoy your day with a great read by G. Guilford Barton.
14 Extraordinary Tales of Golf
Barton’s short story collection Golf Is No Ordinary Game is comprised of 14 short stories. As one book review describes it, “Barton takes you on a journey through a variety of locations, different time periods, different dimensions, and amusing scenarios.”
All of the stories are unique and highly imaginative. According to Barton’s bio on his website, he deems himself as a storyteller who uses golf as the vehicle to take his readers to mystical places they’ve never imagined.
Whether you are a golfer or not, what I love about Gilford Barton’s short stories is that they are terrific fictional reads that appeal to all ages. Barton’s ability to incorporate the game of golf into mystical stories with a life lesson makes each story highly entertaining.
Recommended Reads
I highly recommend starting the series with The Magic Niblick. As Barton shares on his website, “Regardless of the title of this story, I do not believe in magic. I do, however, believe in miracles, and there is no greater miracle than a changed life. Much of my writing is metaphor, and the magical club in this tale is a metaphor.”
My personal favorite, The Girl with the Swing, is a marvelous light-hearted read that can easily be shared with your children. Barton describes The Girl with the Swing as “a tale chock full of old-fashioned ideas and old-fashioned values — even the thought of competing for someone’s hand is a throwback to days gone by. Days, I for one, wish were still around.”
