Autumn in New England was always my favorite time of year growing up. Cool, crisp, weather, apple picking, hot cider, and beautiful foliage are just a few of the things I miss since moving to Hawaii. Fortunately, moving numerous times as a military spouse, I’ve learned to cherish memories and more importantly to make new ones while embracing change! Here are some fun places in Hawaii I enjoy visiting in the Fall!
Aloun Farms Pumpkin Festival
Head over to Ewa and enjoy a fun-filled day with family and friends at Aloun farms pumpkin festival. There are tractor pulled hayrides, pony rides, food booths, jumping balloons and games for everyone to enjoy. Finish the day picking pumpkins, Ewa sweet corn or beautiful sunflowers! The Pumpkin Patch opens to the public on Saturday & Sunday, October 14-15, 21-22, 28-29 from 8:30am to 5pm. Children 2 and under are free, and so is parking and hayrides!
Join in Halloween Festivities
Halloween is also celebrated in Hawaii and with it comes the little trick-or-treaters. There are also many fun activities held all over the island. One event is the Spookazopalooza Haunted Train Ride in Ewa Beach! The Hawaiian Railway Society is a non-profit organization which has restored and protected Hawaii’s railroad history. Every year they host a half-hour ride along a historic stretch of track while sharing ghost stories. If you’re brave enough, put on your Halloween costume and climb aboard the only historic railroad on the island of Oahu for a night of scary fun!
Head to the Beach

Hawaii doesn’t have a drastic change of weather temperatures but you will know fall has arrived by measuring the swells in the ocean. We know the season has changed from summer to fall when the surfing tournaments begin at the North Shore. The swells are enormous and reach heights of 20 plus feet! It’s an amazing site to see! Even if you’re not a surfer, you need to watch Mother Nature impress us with epic waves during the fall and winter months. The enormous waves never cease to amaze me!
If you head to the south side of the island you will notice the ocean is basically flat. It’s perfect to head to south shore beaches to enjoy a day relaxing and swimming.
Visit all the wonderful Tourist Attractions
Summer is a fun time of year but visiting some of the tourist spots can be challenging with the crowds. Fall in Hawaii means you can head to those tourist spots without the crowds. So now is your time to be the tourist and visit some of those attractions like the Polynesian Cultural Center, Pearl Harbor, and snorkel at Hanauma Bay!
Head to a Football Game
We will always love our New England Patriots!
When football season begins, we know it’s the beginning of fall. Head over to the Aloha Stadium to watch the University of Hawaii’s, Rainbow Warriors, play a game! Gather with some friends and family to tailgate before the game for added fun!
Look for the Colors of Autumn in Hawaii
In the Fall most of the leaves start to fall on the fragrant plumeria trees but the colors of the leaves don’t change into vibrant hues of orange, yellow and red. We can find those New England fall foliage colors in our beautiful sunsets!
Hawaii ‘s fall is so different than New England’s and yet so much joy and beauty can be found in both places. So when I start to miss New England, I can bake an apple pie, light some pumpkin spiced candles, sip on apple cider and crank up the ac for a day! After that, I’ll head to the beach!
