“The Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the Earth”. -Native American proverb
Earth Day on Kauai, Hawaii:
Earth Day is one of the most beloved days of the year in our island. Families from all over Kauai came to spend the weekend at the beautiful, ancient land of Waipa Ahupua`a, located just past Hanalei town. (An ahupua`a is land division of Old Hawaii, flowing from the mountains to the sea, thus creating an entire ecosystem that would sustain all the inhabitants within.)
The celebration continued from April 20th-22nd, and everyone had such a wonderful time honoring the beautiful land that gives to us all we need to survive and thrive.
Hundreds of Kauaians enjoyed the festival throughout the weekend where there was plenty of room for all. The entertainment was provided by musicians far and wide.
Youssoupha Sidibe, internationally acclaimed West African Kora musician, amazed everyone with his beautiful and unique sounds. Local sensations, such as Preeta Carlson and band, performed as well as John Dumas, opera singing Nina Starsong, and local reggae band, Burning Bush. The entire event was coordinated with such care. Delicious, Kauai grown food was provided by local chefs.
Just like in Old Hawaii, the gourmet food was served on banana leaves, therefore creating, no waste. Best way to do dishes…throw your “plate” in the bushes!
Earth day provided a variety or workshops for everyone. Native plant talks, yoga, massage, and various other workshops composed the mornings and then music permeated the fun filled afternoons. The keiki (children) truly enjoyed all yoga tumbling, creative painting projects, giant connect four, and so much more.
Chi Gong was offered by the beautiful stream and as well peaceful massage and meditation instruction.
There was even a “Blessing Tree” where you could write your prayer or intention in honor of Earth Day on a leaf and tie it with the others. I wrote “Sustainable Kauai.”
Big smiles abounded all weekend long at this year’s Earth Day celebration on Kauai! Hope to see your family at next year’s event.

Great article Mahana and a truly inspiring few days that we were blessed to have. This event could not have taken place in a more perfect location than the north shore of Kauai.
Mahalo!
