‘Ohana Stands For Sharing and Caring and of Course, Family!
Do you have an aging parent who refuses to talk about their future? If so, my heart goes out to you. It was back in 2006 when my siblings and I were grieving from the death of my mom while having to find simultaneous care for my father. We were even more stressed about how he was going to pay for it. I also had a ten-year-old son to care for at home, so I did not have the time to be a full-time caregiver. If only I knew then, what I know now having my SRES designation, it could have made the difficult discussion of aging easier.
You see, in the earlier years before my mom’s death, my various clients told me stories about their family disputes over property and money. Often siblings couldn’t agree about their aging parents’ care, or they disputed about monies after their parents had passed on. One client told me his adult children fought over cars and even little things like teacups and TV sets when his ex-wife passed on. Often I would bring up the subject about estate planning and care to my parents, and my father would brush off the subject by saying that my mom (who was nine years younger than he at the time) would outlive him.
Senior Real Estate Specialist
Having acquired my SRES (Senior Real Estate Specialist) designation years after their passing, I look back and understand why my mother refused to talk about her future. The designation covered why most people needed a living trust. This designation also taught me how to be compassionate and patient because seniors who often have a difficult time with change.
Unfortunately only until my mom had her first heart attack, she succumbed to reasoning with me. My parents didn’t own much, but they did own a home free and clear. I explained to her why they needed not only a will, but they also required needed a trust document to protect them from probate and told them about the pitfalls of not having one.
Many elderly wait until an accident happens or a major health concern arises like how my mom did before talking about their future. By then emotions had run high, and it made decisions more stressful. Also, reputable retirement homes have a waiting list, so it makes exploring early beneficial.
