Frequently, I find myself describing the distinct characteristics of beaches on the windward side of the Big Island, especially in the Hilo area, which differs significantly from those on the leeward side. I live on the windward side of the Big Island and love the beaches of Hilo where you will find me snorkeling and kayaking whenever I have time! Here’s an overview of notable Hilo beaches:
Richardson Beach Park
Renowned for its black sand, created by finely crushed lava rock, providing a visually striking shoreline.
Features a protected lagoon suitable for swimming and snorkeling.
Natural tide pools offer a glimpse into marine life, making it fascinating for marine biology enthusiasts.
Picnic facilities with tables and grassy spaces make it an ideal spot for family or friends.
Sea turtles often inhabit the area, offering visitors the chance to observe these magnificent creatures.
Carlsmith Beach Park (Four Miles Beach)
Boasts tide pools with a natural spring that attracts sea turtles.
A great location for swimming, snorkeling, and picnicking.
A calm lagoon, created by a natural breakwater, provides a protected area for marine life, enhancing the snorkeling experience.
Leleiwi Beach Park
Features a rocky shoreline with black sand and abundant tide pools.
A picnic area with pavilions is perfect for gatherings.
Fishermen are often seen fishing off the shoreline.
Reeds Bay Beach Park
A small beach park along Hilo Bay with lovely views.
A nice sandy beach, particularly suitable for kids.
Excellent launching area for kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.
Picnic area and playground for children.
Coconut Island (Mokuola)
While not a traditional beach, it’s a small islet in Hilo Bay with a park and coastal views.
Features picnic areas and a small sandy beach.
Holds historical significance as a pu’uhonua (place of refuge) for Hawaiians, known for healing and rejuvenation.
Despite not having expansive sandy shores, Hilo beaches offer everything one needs to enjoy Hawaii’s tropical waters. Activities such as snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, observing turtles, picnicking, and sightseeing can all be experienced at the various beaches in Hilo.
