Where are the estates for horses on Maui? For many people in Hawaii, or those looking to move to Maui, horses and large acreage are a priority. Hawaii has a huge horse culture since the early Paniolo Days. The first horse arrived as a gift to King Kamhehameha in 1803, landing Kawaihae on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Horses, equestrian culture and ranching have played a major role in Hawaii for generations ever since. Upcountry Maui is home to the historical major ranches of Haleakala Ranch, Ka’ono’ulu Ranch, Kaupo Ranch and ‘Ulupalakua Ranch along with remnants of the Von Tempsky Ranch. In addition, Oprah Winfrey has been acquiring large parcels for her OW Ranch in Keokea and Ulupalakua.

There are many other smaller ranches that we may touch in other matters. I don’t want to miss any of my rancher friends so just know that we had Piiholo Ranch,  Diamond B, Sakugawa, Thompson Ranch, etc. Many of these ranches are also able to lease lands from private parties as well as government lands. Therefore, Upcountry Maui has been able to retain Tens of Thousands of acres in open space, allowing for our beautiful vistas of emerald pastures on the slopes of the Haleakala scattered with cattle, sheep, goats and our beloved horses.
