Of course when a Hawaiʻi Life real estate agent releases a new listing, we want to promote it with a blog post about the listing. If you have been following my blogs (almost 600 of them!) you would also notice that I often blog about properties listed for sale, whether or not they are mine personally, or even Hawaiʻi Life listings. Equestrian properties. Hawi homes on acreage. Conservation parcels. Current listings in a Kohala Coast condominium complex or North Kohala gated community like Puakea Bay Ranch or Kohala Ranch.
And so without further ado, here are a couple of homes I had the opportunity to view in the past few weeks that I think are special properties. Very different locations and price points. What the two homes have in common is really cool greenhouses for the serious gardener (or those aspiring to become one). Whether your aspiration is to grow flowers or food these homes are ready for that lifestyle component. They also have ocean views — and some other features in common.
Waimea Home With the Best Views – Elevated on Puʻu Hokuʻula
The green puʻu or cinder cones that mark the upcounty landscape of Waimea (Kamuela per the post office) are one of its most distinctive — and beautiful — features. Rising above the town center is Puʻu Hokuʻula — a storied place. The homes that grace the hillside, often referred to as “Nob Hill,” are among the most gracious in Waimea. I have often enjoyed visiting homes of clients and friends for dinner and conversation by the fire or an evening of kanikapila.
New to the market is a 3 bed/3.5 bath home with clean interior lines, beautiful woodwork in flooring and cabinetry, ofuro soaking tub, 468 sq ft greenhouse and Zen Garden, perfectly oriented to capture the stunning views. Photos truly do not do the mountain and ocean views justice.
The greenhouse? I have not forgotten. Down a flight of stairs on the lower part of the lot, you have your choice of aquaponic, hydroponic and aeroponic growing systems, all connected to the photovoltaic system and solar water.
Maliu Ridge Home Above Hawi
This home was my listing when it sold to the current owners (it is not a Hawaiʻi Life listing now). Since their purchase two years ago the new owners have replaced the flooring, photovoltaic and solar hot water systems, and added a smaller fenced area for dogs or children (the entire 1.5-acre property is already fully fenced). The 3 bed/2 bath home is a compact 1,859 sq ft but you will live a lot of the time on the additional 1,323 sq ft of lanai.
Similarities with my Waimea pick besides the greenhouse: the street address also references a notable puʻu. This Maliu Ridge (Hawi) home has an ocean view, a hot tub instead of the ofuro, and custom cabinetry with Japanese-inspired design touches.
All this for one-third of the asking price of the Waimea home!
Both homes are listed by other brokerages…which means that if you call me — or any Hawaiʻi Life agent — to represent you, we avoid the constraints of dual agency and you get 100% of our negotiating power. If neither of these is exactly what you are looking for, we are beginning to see new inventory come on for the “high season,” so let us know what your preferences might be.
