Hawaii Kai is a beautiful community located on the eastern end of the island of Oahu. The former fishpond and wetland area was developed by Henry Kaiser in the 1960s and is now home to 30,000 residents. People love living in this community, which is centered around Maunalua Bay, the marina, and the ocean. It’s a vibrant and diverse place to live and a great place to call home.
Here are just a few things for you to love about Hawaii Kai:
1. The Great Lawn
You know you are in Hawaii Kai when you see the Great Lawn. An expanse of green lawn sprinkled with palm trees is a signature piece of our community. The Great Lawn provides a warm welcome when you enter our community.
2. Maunalua Bay
The Bay is located across the Great Lawn and is a favorite among canoe paddlers, boaters, kayakers, fishermen, and picnickers. It’s also a great place to watch sunsets.
3. Hawaii Kai Farmlands
Did you know there are farms in Hawaii Kai? Kamilo Nui Valley contains agricultural lands, and our farmers are a mainstay in our community. “Take care of the land, and the land will take care of you.”
4. Sandy Beach
If you are into bodyboarding or bodysurfing, this is the place to be. Be careful, though, as the waves can be treacherous. Even if you don’t go in the water, you’ll enjoy watching some amazing water wave riders and the scenic view.
5. Dining
Both the Hawaii Kai Towne Center and the Koko Marina Center offer an array of restaurants – Roy’s, Assagio’s, Moena Cafe, Zippy’s, Outback, Fatboy’s, Loco Moco, Greek Marina, Liko’s, and Kona Brewery, just to name a few of Hawaii Kai’s popular eateries.
6. Shopping
There is a Safeway and a Costco, a City Mill, Long’s, and a Walgreens. Plus, you’ll find some cute boutiques and gift shops. You’ll love the convenience to a variety of shopping venues.
7. Kaiser High School
Are you a football fan? The community comes out in force to watch the Cougars play. Kaiser is one of the best high schools in the state and test scores are consistently high. Our football team ranks pretty high, too, as does all the camaraderie you’ll experience rooting for the Cougars.
8. The Marina
Hawaii Kai is built around the marina, with nearly 13 miles of waterfront property lined with rock walls. For those who love water-related activities, it’s the perfect place to live. You can enjoy boating, jet skiing, diving, surfing, parasailing, snorkeling, and more. It’s a dream spot for water enthusiasts and for those who just want a water view!
9. Koko Head Crater
If you love a challenge, you’ll love this hike. The Crater Trail is a 1.8-mile hike and is rated as difficult. That’s because it is. If hiking isn’t your thing, you can always stroll through the botanical gardens inside the crater.
10. Hawaii Kai Golf Course
The championship course features a challenging layout with elevation changes and breathtaking views! There’s also a 3-par for those of you who prefer a little less of a challenge.
You will find that there are many reasons to love Hawaii Kai. It’s a special place with special people. Good people. Friendly people. Ask anyone who lives here and they will tell you, “Lucky we live Hawaii Kai.”
