Born and raised on the island of Oahu, then moving to the US mainland, and then back to Oahu — I know island life is a different type of living.
Island Fever
Island fever can definitely be real. That is, if you don’t like exploring the outdoors. Hikes and beaches are endless here. Fishing, swimming/snorkeling, surfing are just a few hobbies you might need in order to avoid any type of island-fever here. Yes, Oahu is an island. But, if you’re willing to explore — you’ll never get tired of this place.
Do People Really Use Canoes as Transportation?
No, not always. We have highways and even public transportation on the island of Oahu. Although, if you live in a marina community like Hawaii Kai‘s marina-front community — people really do use canoes, jet skis, boats to commute to some amazing eateries.
What is the Shopping Like on Oahu?
Pretty spectacular. Oahu is home to one of the largest outdoor malls — Ala Moana Shopping Center. We’ve got local boutiques to huge department stores like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. Not to mention some incredible local restaurants to chains like Cheesecake Factory.
Waikiki Strip also offers some amazing shopping.
Cost of Living
Because many of our produce and commodities are shipped here, costs are typically higher than most places on the US mainland. It’s the price you pay in order to live in paradise. Our tropical climate allows for us to grow produce right in our backyard!
How Many Different Cities and Neighborhoods are on Oahu?
MANY. So many and all so different. It may not be noticeable when vacationing here — but, there are so many different neighborhoods on the island. Each offering its own uniqueness. From the North Shore of Oahu to the South Shore of Oahu — you can see the difference!
