Hawaii Home Buying Guide for the Animal Lover

As I have stated in my previous blog post regarding renting a home with pets in Hawaii, it can be daunting. The ultimate solution would be that you buy a home and have as many dogs, cats, birds, rabbits that your heart desires. While this truly is the solution to the problem when you have pets, you may still find yourself hitting some roadblocks even when you buy.

Condos

First, if you are buying a condo, you have to make sure the building that you are buying in is pet-friendly. I can’t tell you how many people I have come into contact with who have said, “My agent did not know my building wasn’t pet-friendly, and now I got a notice that I could be kicked out. Can you help me?” Can you imagine?! Buying a home for hundreds of thousands of dollars and being told your animal can’t live there?! This is why you must make sure your agent is educated on the area and building to know what the guidelines are, so you are not stuck in a bad situation.

Single Family Homes

Second, if you are buying a single family home, you don’t necessarily have as much to worry about. Although, a lot of association rules state that you can only have a certain amount of animals on the premises. I know what you’re thinking, how outrageous is this?!?! I know, I know, but you have to think about it this way…Hawaii is made up of 8 major Hawaiian islands. All of which are very small. If every person on each island had 5 dogs and 7 cats, we would be living in the jungle. The associations think of it in a similar form. (Trust me, the jungle sounds amazing to me too haha, but we have to follow the rules, right?)
