If you are not familiar with the Hawaiian lifestyle and culture, let me give you a quick snapshot as it pertains to living. This, unlike some on the Mainland, is a culture that cares about family. This rings true from old to young, with all centered around family. With that said, it is not uncommon to have adult children or aging parents live in a Hawaiian home with family. The real question is: how do you achieve that living situation while still having some separation?

The answer is an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), or more commonly called, an Ohana house. The new D.R Horton Hoopili recognized this and are building an attached ADU into some of the new construction models as an option. This may not be something you are thinking about initially when buying, but if things change down the line, it sure will be nice to have.
These smaller structures will be connected to the house, but still have a separate entrance. They will come with a full kitchen and dedicated parking. How nice would it be to have a “separate” home for the child that may return or the aging parent that may need some extra care? This is not a small extra bedroom in the corner of your existing house, but a real separate living addition. The Hoopili ADU will give you the privacy you may need with the close proximity you want. This also gives an independent feeling to the occupant as they are truly in a separate structure.
