Thinking about remodeling your vacation rental? Before you do, here are 4 unique tips to consider:
1. Don’t Overdo It
Depending on your price point, you don’t want to buy overly complicated appliances. In the age of touch and voice technology, you might want to pass on the touch-operated faucet or the talking range. High tech appliances don’t only cost much more than the more basic options, but installation and maintenance cost more too.
Since you’ll be having guests staying in your vacation rental, it’s best not to have a refrigerator that most can’t figure out how to use. Remember, often times the looks of your appliances is more than enough to impress your visitors. You can still buy the stainless steel fridge, just not the one with the touch screen with apps on the door.
2. Opt For Open Space Instead of Too Many Cabinets
Does your kitchen have an island with cabinets hanging above it from the ceiling? Decide whether or not you need these cabinets and consider removing them for a more open feel.
When someone lives in a space full time, they collect a number of kitchen items and spices that a week long vacationer will never have the time to use. Spend a lot of time considering what you want to supply your guests with when it comes to kitchenware, clothes storage, outdoor items, etc.
You also may want to consider suitcase stands in the closets and oversized end tables in the bedroom to allow you to remove an oversized and underused dresser. Instead, add a full-length mirror in that open space, your guests will approve.
3. Install Durable Flooring
Porcelain tile is probably the best option for flooring. It’s super hard, difficult to chip, doesn’t scratch easily, and is quick and easy to clean. If you want the look of hardwood, then get engineered planks that can withstand as many types of accidents as possible. You don’t want easily scratched flooring, like bamboo, in a space where people will be rolling and dragging luggage.
4. Think Hard About Getting Glass Shower Doors or Paneling
I’ve been in so many units that have heavily spotted shower doors. This is a recommendation for people who may not want to hire the top-of-the-line cleaners or who plan on taking long-term rentals without regularly cleaning by your cleaning company. You really need to make sure the cleaners stay on top of the glass cleaning and use water stain remover regularly.
You may want to consider a frosted glass design if you’re going to use glass in your shower. As a 7-year owner of a short-term condo cleaning business, let me know if you have questions on keeping those glass doors crystal clear.
