Do you love being the center of attention? In the midst of the hustle and bustle? Where the action happens? Well, then I would say you need to pay a visit to the lively Chinatown/Downtown district. Immerse yourself in the latest trends and happenings – and it’s all within walking distance.
Food, Fun & Entertainment Abound in Chinatown
If you’re hungry, you don’t have to go very far to find a great spot to eat. From quick bites to casual lunches and elegant dining – you’ll find what you need and crave. From Chinese to American, Vietnamese, Indian, Japanese, Moroccan, Thai – you name it, Chinatown has it! You’ll feel like a world-traveler without even leaving the island.
Some popular places include The Pig and the Lady, Lucky Belly, Livestock Tavern, Duc’s Bistro, Little Village and Legend Seafood. If you’re in the mood for dim sum, then head on over to one of my favorites – Mei Sum Chinese Dim Sum on Nuuanu Avenue. This newer location has a clean, white interior, good prices, and great food. They even give you complimentary dessert at the end of your meal!

If you are into the arts, then there are tons of places and events that you need to check out. For instance, First Friday events feature art, food, and crafts – and yes, it is on the first Friday of each month. The Hawaii State Art Museum (or HiSAM) located in the No. 1 Capitol Building is an eye-catching architectural beauty on the corner of Hotel and Richards Streets. Linger and enjoy the art, crafts, workshops, and sway to the music. The theme changes each month, keeping it fresh and exciting.

Another popular gathering spot is the Arts at Mark’s Garage. It is a major hub for thought-provoking exhibits and events of varying genres. Or what about the beautifully restored Hawaii Theatre? It plays host to a variety of shows including concerts, comedic performances, acrobatics, and film festivals.

Street festivals are tons of fun and seem to happen quite often in Chinatown. Some fun events coming up include Pancakes & Booze Art Show on October 17 at the Arts at Mark’s Garage. If you’re looking for the ultimate Halloween party, then Hallowbaloo Music & Arts Festival on October 31st is for you. There’s a costume contest, fun run, a ball, and don’t forget, music, food, and art too! It should be a screaming good time. When you’re done roaming the streets, head to one of the many bars for drinks and dancing. Popular spots include Bar 35, Nextdoor, Downbeat Lounge, Manifest, Fresh Café, Scarlet Honolulu, and Square Barrels.

After noshing on your favorite foods and fun-filled revelry to the wee hours of the morning, you’re going to need somewhere to rest.
