What makes Volcano so very special, and why do the people who live here feel so special? I am one…a Volcano-ite, Volcanite, Volcano-eek. Call us what you will, we are one-of-a-kind. Each and every one of us. From the artists, to retirees, to generational families, we call it “ours” and we live within the rainforest of this breathtaking, beautiful, close-knit community. God’s country.
What It’s Like Growing Up Here
My own family, both sides, have been residents off and on for generations. There is a unique history here and everyone has a story; how they found Volcano, how Volcano found them, why they return every year. You will hear when meeting them, why they live here, why they stay, why they leave, why they yearn to return, why they’ve come back for good.
It isn’t close to the large high schools, the closest public school being Keaau High School, or our closest private school, Kamehameha, so being a part of interscholastic sports can make scheduling a challenge for parents and students alike – but we have a great school bus system and the Hele On Bus has increased its frequency and schedule, making it easier for students to get to and from practices.
My own children could not wait to get out of remote Volcano, growing up there in the 90’s; it’s really only 30 minutes driving time from Hilo. Itching to hit the big city, to move to Oahu “where the action is,” but as more mature, young adults, they have shown a desire to return. They love Volcano.
They didn’t demonstrate this love as pre-teens and teens, but they do now. There is a deep respect for where they ‘mostly’ grew up; a desire to return and raise their own children here. A sense of peace and comfort in knowing the other “mountain” boys and girls who grew up during the “hard times,” now adults with children themselves.
Our cool climate makes for the best Christmas in Hawaii ever and we welcome it from July to December. Yes, we celebrate Christmas in July. Hanging out on Sundays at Cooper Center for the farmers’ market…coffee at Ola’s store.
Crisp. Clear. Beautiful.
This fabulous 1960’s farmhouse typifies old Volcano. 6 acres of rolling pasture-like lawn. This property has been sold and is the happy owner of a new person.
