Who hasn’t heard the popular song by the Rolling Stones, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want?” It was a hit in the late ’60s and perhaps one of the most popular rock and roll songs ever written. I can’t speak to the meaning behind all of the lyrics, but I agree that “you can’t always get what you want.” I understand what it looks and feels like when our desires are beyond our reach.
Seller’s Market
In today’s real estate market, there are many buyers who are not getting what they want. Buyers who are settling on smaller homes and on less preferred locations. Buyers who are trading their dreams for a single-family home for a townhouse or a condo. Escalating prices, tight inventory, and the affordability factor have left Buyers frustrated and feeling as if they can’t get anything they want.
What’s a Buyer to Do?
So, what’s a Buyer to do? What are you to do? Let’s go back to the song. “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, well, you just might find you get what you need.” Here’s the thing, in all of my years of selling real estate, I can’t remember a Buyer who ever got everything they wanted in a home. This includes myself. I wanted a four bedroom, I ended up with a three bedroom. Big was on my list, small is what I got. The point is, the house my husband and I purchased was not everything we wanted in a home, but it was everything we needed and we have no regrets. We bought in an escalating market. We were competing with multiple offers. It was frustrating. Hard. We lost out on several properties, but we finally secured a house. A home.
Willing to Compromise?
If you cannot get what you want, are you willing to compromise so that you get what you need? Only you can decide, but before you do, turn on the sound and enjoy some old time rock and roll. Maybe Mick and the boys will help you decide that what you need is enough! In life and in a house.
