Would You Rather Swim With Turtles or Mow the Lawn? 43 Papaua Place

If you’d rather snorkel than mow the lawn, consider this Polynesian pole house on Maui, Hawaii. The magical home—which is located on the tip of Papaua Point and has the Pacific Ocean for a front yard—is on the market for $7,995,000.

While there are some trees and grass surrounding the home, it’s the sparkling water that’s the focus of this eco-friendly abode with dramatic ocean views located at 43 Papaua Place in Napili.

You could take a morning paddle or an afternoon snorkel with turtles. Turtles! That’s me above, on our daily swim with turtles.

The ocean is your front yard. It’s a magical playground! Properties with this type of ocean frontage in Maui – or the world for that matter – are very, very hard to find. The second-floor patio offers views of Lanai and Molokai islands, and a pathway leads to tide pools and the ocean.

Depending on the season, you’ll see breaching whales, leaping dolphins, or skilled surfers. Watch the surf action from your front row seat.

The house at 43 Papaua is primarily made of redwood, native koa wood and red eucalyptus which are fashioned around vertical wood poles. The home features indoor-outdoor living spaces, including a covered patio and wraparound decks and lava rock walls featuring over 100 feet of ocean frontage.

Pole homes, according to HawaiiLife.com, work this way: “Large-diameter vertical wood poles are bolted or sunken into concrete footings, which carry the weight of the floor and roof. Girder beams and floor joists are bolted directly to the notched vertical poles, creating a unique structural grid-like system.”

The structures can be built on rocky sites that are less than ideal for other types of construction, and with the least disruption to the land. They also tend to be naturally cooler, a perk in a tropical climate. Pole homes usually have deep eaves and can protect the house from the hot afternoon sun.

This surfer’s paradise was designed by Frank Stiller and constructed in 1981 for a local restaurateur, Rob Thibault (Leilani’s, Duke’s, Hula’s etc). The Maui pole home was sold in the mid-1990s to the current owners, who have now decided to let it go.

Wake up to surf views and sounds of the ocean from the primary and guest bedroom.

This unique 4,000 square-foot property features 5 bedroom and 4 full bathrooms, a game room, sauna, jacuzzi and upstairs whale watching/yoga room/study.

The gated community of Papaua Place, in the area known as Napili in West Maui, has just 1o homes.

There’s a mix of year-rounders and vacationers who own homes in the area. The current owners have even rented out their place as a short-term vacation home, and it is being sold fully furnished, so you can move right in. Click here to virtually tour the home.

43 Papaua place is located near Kapalua resort with world-class golf, spas, hotels, restaurants (like Merrimans, above) and Honolua Bay. Life doesn’t get better than this!
