Worthshop 6: Relate

In December, Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers hosted our 6th annual conference, called Worthshop. When you hear “real estate conference,” you may imagine polyester blazers, comb-overs, strong sales tactics, and to top it off, bad pick up lines at the Convention Center bar. Or did I repeat myself?

I’ve been to that conference, and that’s not us.

Instead, Hawaii Life’s leadership, Matt Beall and Winston Welborn, seek out and authentically nurture relationships with leaders in various industries and circles, well beyond property, lending, and title services. Those topics are touched upon, but more relevant are the tangential topics which fill out the frame and lend perspective to our primary business, such as land preservation and charitable giving, architecture and design, media, interpersonal relationship skills (not selling), culture, technology, and wellness.

Highlights

Some highlights from this year’s Worthshop were:

Dogan Cuceloglu

Dogan Cuceloglu, Turkish psychologist, discussing the different psychological effects of parenting styles in Western and Middle Eastern cultures, to apply to and inform our relationships with our clients, co-workers, and friends.

Michela O’Connor Abrams

Michela O’Connor Abrams, CEO of Dwell Media, spoke about modern design, architecture, and the difference in values between affluent consumers 35 years ago versus today, which inform the way we approach and confront high dollar clients.

Matthew Ferrara

Matthew Ferrara, philosopher and hobbyist photographer, creatively encourages us to braid together the threads of each presentation to demonstrate that the conference is not a “how-to” but a “why-to,” and a “think about.”

Attracting international speakers of this caliber is uncommon for a real estate firm of our size and location, but somehow they’re drawn to visit Hawaii in December, which definitely works in our favor. We were challenged, encouraged, and inspired. And, I’m not saying there were no bad pick up lines, but at least they were at the swim-up bar under the arches of double rainbows at sunset.

I look forward to seeing what Hawaii Life has in store for next year.
