Just as in other locations around the country, here on Kauai, I think most of us enjoy the anticipation and change that comes with each season. October is here, and the first handful of North Shore swells have arrived. The days and nights are getting a bit cooler, and a new rotation of seasonal fruits are popping up at the farmer’s markets.
Sometimes, that itch for a change of setting comes early, and here on Kauai (and Hawaii more broadly), we are blessed with access to a variety of microclimates that make that experience accessible at any time. In mid-September, a weekend trip up to Kokee provided this magic.
What was a warmer than usual day on the North Shore, was a crisp day up in the mountains. The charm of a weekend in Kauai’s mountains cannot be understated. Rustic, authentic cabins add to the allure. We rented our “go-to” cabin that has started to feel like a home away from home, single-wall cedar boards, a corrugated metal roof with rusted eaves, and an original stone chimney.
We fill our days up here with leisurely hikes, most of which culminate in humbling vistas of the Napali Coast or the Waimea Canyon, but others that are nothing more than a forest path where you’re forced to take note that you are surrounded by a completely different flora than you’ll find at sea level, complete with old-growth redwood groves and stone fruit trees that might make you think you’re in the Pacific northwest.
Warming up the house with a fire, putting an extra blanket on the bed, marveling at Kauai’s diverse ecosystems — the list goes on. Kokee’s gifts are another facet of the Kauai life we appreciate so much.
