This last Sunday, January 22nd of 2023 was an exciting and historic day for the Hawaiian Islands. The internationally acclaimed Eddie Aikau Big Wave Surf Invitational was held for the 10th time.
Since its inception in 1984, excited fans wait with anticipation each year as the north shore surf builds for the season. If the waves hit the right height, of at least 40ft, they will run the competition. This year the waves were looking good, and the organizers announced the competition for January 11th. Shortly after, it was canceled due to wind and poor conditions, and the disappointment was tangible.
After the competition was called for the 22nd, people started to pour over to Waimea Bay. The night before the competition tents and gazebos were in place as people were vying for the best vantage point.
Luke Shepardson, a North Shore lifeguard who was working that day, took a break and won the competition. His humble demeanor and unexpected win made him a fan favorite with the local population. Many congratulations and much aloha to Luke for his victory.
