Although I live in East O’ahu, I regularly go to Waikiki to surf one of my favorite breaks. Pre Covid-19 days, even though finding street parking was a drag, the surf was worth it plus I enjoyed people watching and checking out all the activity while making the walk to and from the beach. However, once it appeared that Covid-19 could be a serious health threat, I stopped going to Waikiki and even took over a 3 week hiatus from surfing. From my home, I read and watched as Hawaii implemented a shut down that ultimately led to a mandatory 14 day quarantine for nearly anyone arriving to the Hawaiian Islands. Although Covid-19 has claimed lives in Hawaii, fortunately for whatever reason, Hawaii has one of the lowest infection and mortality rates and recently I decided to return to Waikiki for a surf session. I was in awe with what I saw. It is likely I would not have believed Waikiki could be so quiet if I hadn’t seen it for myself. I recently returned to document it — check it out.
