Moving To Hawaii

Top 3 Reasons To Move To Hawai’i

Aloha kakahiaka,

Hawai’i is often called “Paradise on Earth” for good reason. Its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, active volcanoes and vibrant culture make it a truly magical place. I am originally from Canada, and I moved to Oʻahu Hawai’i during the summer of 2008. Since then, I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

There are countless reasons why I consider Hawai’i one of the greatest places to live in, and here are my top 3:

1. Pleasant Climate

Hawaii’s weather is generally excellent year-round, but there are some variations between the ISLANDS & the SEASONS. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Dry season ~Nā kau wela (May to October): This is the best time to visit for sunny, warm weather and fewer clouds. Hawaii experiences constant tradewinds. These winds are steady, prevailing winds that blow from the northeast to the southwest across the Hawaiian Islands. PLEASE NOTE that Hawaii’s hurricane season officially runs from June 1st to November 30th. Here is the link to the National Hurricane Center to know more about analyses, forecasts & preparedness!
  • Wet season ~Nā kau ua (November to April): While it can rain more frequently during this period, showers are often brief and followed by sunshine.

The best ISLAND for weather depends on your preferences:

  • Kauaʻi: Known for its lush rainforests and waterfalls, Kauaʻi can be wetter than other islands, especially on the north side. Fun fact: The title of the wettest place on Earth is often attributed to Mount Waialeale on Kauaʻi!
  • Oʻahu: Honolulu, the main city on Oʻahu, has a relatively dry climate, except for the windward side, which faces the prevailing tradewinds. It is known for its frequent afternoon showers across Kane’ohe Bay. This is due to the tradewinds pushing moist air up the mountains, causing it to cool and condense into rain.
  • Maui: This island offers a good balance of sunshine and rainfall, with some areas like the west coast, from Kihei to Lahaina, being drier than others.
  • Hawaiʻi Big Island: The Big Island has diverse climates due to its size and volcanic activity. The west side, Kona, is generally drier and you generally considered the best place to watch sunsets, while the east side, Hilo, can be wetter.

Ultimately, the best weather for you will depend on your personal preferences and activities. If you’re looking for sunny beaches and warm temperatures, the dry season on islands like Maui or Oʻahu might be ideal. If you don’t mind some rain and enjoy lush landscapes, Kauaʻi or the east side of the Big Island could be great options.

2. Stunning Landscape

All Hawaiian ISLANDS boast breathtaking scenery, including pristine beaches, lush rainforests, towering volcanoes and crystal-clear waters. Here are some of the most popular views that will you leave speechless:

Oʻahu

  • Diamond Head State Monument: Enjoy panoramic views of Waikiki Beach, Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean, from the summit of this extinct volcano.
  • Kāneʻohe:  If you have a chance to take a drive around Kāneʻohe on Oʻahu, which is known for its stunning natural beauty, you will be captivated by the dramatic backdrop of the Kane’ohe Bay and of the Koʻolau Mountains. The Koʻolau Mountains are estimated to be around 2.5 million years old!

Maui:

  • Haleakalā National Park: Witness breathtaking sunrises or sunsets from the summit of this dormant volcano, which offers panoramic views of the island.
  • Road to Hana: This scenic and curvy drive offers numerous viewpoints along the way including lush valleys, coastal cliffs, waterfalls and the infamous Seven Sacred Pools. This road is very narrow. Please do your own research before heading out.
  • Wai’ānapanapa Black Sand Beach: This beach features a series of natural tide pools. The sand is formed when hot lava is cooled by the sea resulting in basalt – a dark, fine volcanic rock that shatters to create sand. The turtles love it!

Kauaʻi:

  • Kalalau Lookout: Experience the dramatic beauty of the Na Pali Coast from this viewpoint, which offers stunning views of the Kalalau Valley.
  • Waimea Canyon State Park: Explore the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” and enjoy panoramic views of the canyon from various lookout points.

Hawaiʻi Big Island:

  • Mauna Kea Observatory: Witness the stars and planets from one of the world’s most renowned astronomical observatories. The landscape looks like you’re on the Moon! Here’s the link if you want to make a reservation at Mauna Kea Observatory.
  • Black Sand Beach: Enjoy a unique beach experience at Punalu’u Black Sand Beach.

Remember that these are just a few of the many stunning viewpoints in Hawaii. With its diverse landscapes and natural beauty, there’s always something new to discover.

3. Aloha Spirit

The ‘Aloha Spirit’ is a pervasive sense of warmth, friendliness and hospitality that characterizes Hawaiian people and their way of life. ‘ALOHA’ is more than just a greeting in Hawai’i: this ‘SPIRIT” is deeply ingrained in our Hawaiian culture and is evident in the interactions between locals and visitors alike. Their hospitality and welcoming nature are legendary.

Key aspects of the ‘Aloha Spirit’ include:

  • Warmth and Hospitality: Hawaiians are renowned for their welcoming and friendly nature. They often greet others with a smile, an occasional flower Lei,but always with the ‘Aloha Spirit’ often referred to as being ‘PONO’ ~A pono person is someone who acts with integrity, honesty and fairness.
  • Respect and Compassion: The ‘Aloha Spirit’ emphasizes respect for all beings, regardless of their background or beliefs. It promotes compassion and understanding.
  • Peace and Harmony: Hawaiians strive for a harmonious and peaceful existence, seeking balance and tranquility in their lives.
  • Love and Kindness: Aloha embodies the essence of love and kindness, encouraging people to treat others with respect and empathy together with dignity!
