Staying Positive Through the Practice of Gratitude

How do you stay positive in a world of unrest? What do you do when it feels like there is nothing you can do? Our world seems to have gone awry and life can be so stressful and  scary at times. It’s hard to stay positive amidst all the negativity. But, we must. Staying positive is not only important for our own mental, emotional, and physical well-being, but it’s important for the well-being of the people around us.

One of the best ways we can keep positive is to practice gratitude. Studies show that appreciating what we’ve got can help us survive, and even thrive, through tough and challenging times.

Research from the Greater Good Science Center at Berkeley University proves that an attitude of gratitude is good for us. Check out the many benefits below:

So, how do you practice gratitude? One way is to dole out thanks daily. Praise the people in your life. Send a text or a handwritten letter to encourage someone and to simply say, “thanks.” Notice people doing good and acknowledge them. Be specific and let them know how much you appreciate what they do.

Keep a gratitude journal — it’s a great way to maintain a thankful spirit. People who keep gratitude journals are reportedly 25% happier than those who don’t. You’ll have fun rereading your journal entries and your spirits will be lifted as you reflect on all the reasons you have to give thanks. If you don’t like the idea of a journal, consider a gratitude calendar. Hang it in plain view and write down a few words each day that reflect the good things in life.

Go outside. Feel the sun’s warmth on your face, savor the fragrances, listen to the sounds of nature. Delight in the beauty that surrounds you. Regardless of where you live, beauty exists. Find it. See it. And, be grateful for it.

Being grateful is more than a “feeling.” It’s a conscious decision to acknowledge and to count our blessings. It’s about grounding ourselves in what is good and then staying focused on that good. So, think about all the good in your life and allow the power of gratitude to keep you feeling positive. Each and every day.
