Mary Anne recognized the need for a private grade school and college prep school in early 2000 as Maui began to attract young families. She and her husband, Nam Le Viet, also an agent with Hawaii Life, are original founding members of Maui Preparatory Academy located in West Maui, which has become a magnet for these young families. Since the first 36 students enrolled at Maui Prep in September 2005, the school has grown into a world-class college preparatory academy that embraces differences in culture, ethnicity, race, religion, and economics, with strong academics, athletics, social values, and community commitment. Mary Anne and Nam are most proud of being members of the Board of Trustees and Foundation Board of Maui Prep, a school whose students are from all over the world.
Mary Anne and Nam open their home, and grand Bösendorfer piano, to musicians who support the arts on Maui. Partnering with Jazz Maui and Art Education for Children Group (AECG) — a non-profit organization that provides afterschool programs for kids, the Le Viets have hosted numerous performers such as Arturo O’Farrill, a two times Afro-Cuban Jazz Grammy Award winner, Tommy James, Director of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Ictus Band, Luis Romano Quartet and Mike Lewis. From time to time, classical music professionals, such as members of the San Francisco Symphony, will stop by to play for local music associations.
Once more, last Friday, the Le Viets welcomed Jazz Maui with world renowned Jazz pianist Justin Kauflin, Katie Thiroux, Matt Witek, Paul Contos, and six young promising talents. They hosted 70 people at their home in Kaanapali Golf Estate for a private concert benefiting AECG. This year, the association opened its first Jazz Camp. This educational event is designed for aspiring young musicians (13+) of all skill levels looking to unleash their creativity and explore the beauty of Hawaii. Instruction included ensembles, master classes, electives and concerts from the award-winning faculty. Daily music curriculum was enhanced with Hawaiian immersion activities including Luau, snorkeling, beach time, history tours, and more.
Furthermore, the faculty is comprised of professionals who have performed at numerous prestigious venues including Birdland, Monterey Jazz Festival, The Blue Note, Montreux Jazz Festival, Walt Disney Concert Hall and tours in Asia, Europe, South America.
