2 Puako Properties Offer a Luxurious Oceanfront Lifestyle on the Big Island
I would say most people who live in Puako are a type of people who are seekers of moments of tropical euphoria. Now that is a odd thing to say, but living in the paradise found in Puako is what many only dream of. What a special small beach community it is!
Living in Puako is truly paradise found
Having moved there in the late 70’s through the mid 80’s, when it was a time warp to an earlier place in time within Hawaii’s more recent history, Puako was precious to have experienced before new development. I know there are more reasons to live in the paradise called Puako than I can list with mere words, because words and photos fall short of capturing Puako’s secret!
Buy or Build a Puako Dream Home?
I want to show you some options. Here is an opportunity to build exactly what you want in Puako! Yes, this blog will show and compare 2 Puako properties. One with a lovely luxury home offered for sale and the other a lot possibly suited to build the new home of your dreams on!
Lets compare:
Priced at $2,600,000, 100 Puako Beach Drive is newly listed and with the common process and procedure for new construction within the oceanfront SMA (special management area guidelines), this could be the location for your dream home (MLS# 257993). (Keep in mind this property has a small old homesite that needs removal).
And then in comparison:
Priced at $4,895,000, this luxury home was built in 2005 (MLS# 256514). It is a plantation style oceanfront home with 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and 2,987 sq.ft. of living area. This property includes lush landscaping providing privacy and evokes relaxation with its proximity to the beautiful Pacific Ocean.
Why Live in Puako?
I have always loved the charm of Puako, tucked away from life’s business, this sleepy village offers a simple lifestyle and yet is so close to the luxurious resorts and lifestyle many enjoy coming home to. It is also without the high maintenance fees associated with other coastal resort subdivisions.
The obvious advantage for Puako is its close location to the shoreline, for those wanting a luxurious oceanfront lifestyle. In comparison to private Kuki’o, a luxury subdivision where your homes are never found this close to the soothing sounds of the tropical blue pacific and shoreline, Puako is a dream come true.
Waking up and swimming at dawn with green sea turtles can be a common place daily activity for you in Puako, or just ‘lanai snorkel,’ grab a drink, and watch the turtles, whales, and dolphins right from the comfort of your armchair!

I too remember the fishing village, Puako, from the 60’s and have snorkeled there almost yearly since then. So many yellow tangs, sea arches, octopus, and whale to see—sigh, I love Puako.
Must not forget the ice cream bar from the general store after a fantastic beach day with so few other people around! Thank for reminding me!

Aloha Heidi… there is nothing like Puako, that’s for sure! Living here for the past 4 years has been one of the greatest joys of my life!! Did I ever tell you I timed myself? It takes me 27 seconds to walk from my front door across the street, down the beach access to the water. These listings are 25 seconds closer!! 🙂

@ Alice, Humm Puako in the 60’s must have been awesome, wasn’t it so remote it was reached by boat? Got to love getting away from it all! Thanks for sharing!
@Katie, I want more time to be on the beach in Puako. At our last meeting more vacation time was your request for us. I will try and make the effort. You will be happy I have a week scheduled for an isolated island oceanfront location in December! 🙂
