Here on the Big Island we can always tell how tourism is doing by the number of jets parked on the tarmac at the Kona Airport which we all see on our way to and from Costco or Kona.
Anything over 10 means tourism is steady; I counted 18 on my way to town over the holiday weekend! High count is usually 30-35 at Christmas Holidays. Along with the smiling faces and burnt shoulders of families and friends enjoying the surf and multiple fireworks up and down the entire Kona/Kohala coastline help account for the Hawaii County tourism figures declaring an increase of nearly 17% since 2009.

My favorite thing is that the airport gets “full” over the holidays and the pilots will drop off their passengers and are sent to Maui or Oahu to “park.” Hee.

I saw this link in your Twitter stream just a few minutes after a “coconut wireless” report from a friend in Hawi that there was a star-sighting there today!
