When people think of Hawaii, many of them think of surfing, snorkeling, hiking, sailing, boating, and any other outdoor activities they can wrap their hands around – and let’s not forget to mention food! So, how can we fit all these activities into a short timeframe being on vacation or working 5-7 days a week, you say?
Kaneohe, that’s where!

Located on the east side of Honolulu, this laid-back but up-to-date town offers everything any single person or family could dream of, with more options to avoid the hustle and bustle of traffic. With condos ranging as low as $350k and up, and single family homes in the high $500 – 600k and up, who says you can’t have it all?

When an accident occurs on our highways, traffic can shut down, any and all plans for the day can cease to exist, and playing Candy Crush on your vacation or day off while sitting in snarling traffic is definitely not our idea of a good time.
Why not, then, give yourself some options?
Kaneohe is located right between three major roadways: the Likelike Highway, the H-3 freeway, as well as being about 5 minutes away from the Pali Highway. These are the 3 main roadways to Honolulu as well as heading out West to Pearl City, Ewa, Kapolei, Makakilo, Ko’olina, Nanakuli, and Makaha. Living in Kaneohe, for me, has given me all I can ask for in lifestyle as well as options for getting to and from work with the least possible traffic.
Kaneohe’s location also puts you right next to the Kahekili Highway, which will lead you on a beautiful trip to Oahu’s world-renowned North Shore. Along the way, you can see sights such as Coconut Island, which was where the famous show Gilligan’s Island was filmed.
Kaneohe’s sandbar draws locals, military, and tourists alike to sail, kayak, or boat out to its sand and reef bottom where people snorkel, fish, and explore as well as, when the tide is low, play sports such as volleyball, dodgeball, kickball, and pretty much any other activity they can think of while they barbecue from their boats or on the sand.
Kaneohe Bay Yacht Club and He’eia boat harbor, where you can launch your boats or personal watercraft, is where you go when you want to head out to catch a prize Yellowfin Tuna, also known as “Ahi,” Au’ or Marlin, or “Ono,” also known as Wahoo, along with many other pelagic or non-pelagic fish. Take a ride on an ATV or horseback through Kualoa Ranch, and kayak out to China Man’s Hat, or spearfish its amazing reefs.

If you’re into more death-defying or dangerous activities, have a go at the North Shore’s amazingly huge winter waves, such as Sunset, Pipeline, Waimea, or Haleiwa. However, these beaches are for expert-level surfers and wave riders, and even then they will still check with lifeguards at those beaches and listen to their expert advice, as I will advise you to do the same, as it will be more fun and safe to watch the pros wipeout from the shoreline. Remember – if in doubt, don’t go out!
You can also locate shark tours out on the North Shore as well if you really want to get your heart rate going. You can jump out of planes, paraglide, or hang glide off a mountain, you name it and it’s all within a short distance of this lush town.

As for me, I like the quiet laid-back atmosphere I get upon returning home from a busy day at work, and if I’m too lazy to cook, I can stop at any of the many eateries in Kaneohe, such as Haleiwa Joe’s, Pake’s Chinese Cuisine, Fresh Catch, Buffalo Wild Wings, Sikdorak-Yakiniku, Gyotaku, Pacifico-Pizza, El Mariachi-Mexican, or of course, Poi Bowl-Hawaiian food.
Shopping is easy with Foodland, Times, and Safeway all within 5 minutes of each other; you will never miss out on deals.
With many great schools and elderly care facilities in the area, as well as Kaneohe Marine Core Base, Bellows Army-Air Force Base, Ft. Shafter, Hickam Air Base, U.S. Coast Guard, and Pearl Harbor all located within a short drive, what more could you need?
When people say, “Location, location, location,” Kaneohe is what I think!
Did I Mention the Views?
If scenery is what you’re interested in, then this place will steal your heart at first glance, from the majestic mountains and cascading waterfalls to the tropical showers keeping the lush, fertile valleys full of life. With flora and fauna everywhere, it’s not hard to spot fruit trees growing off the side of the road right down to the ocean, where fish ponds are also in abundance.
The bay itself is full of life with divers, crabbers, and fishermen alike competing to bring home that prize catch to their families, or mothers and fathers teaching their children the art of fishing as so many have passed on from generation to generation.
