The last time Paul Simon performed in Hawaii was over 50 years ago when he played on Oahu as part of the duo Simon & Garfunkel. August 13 and 14, 2019, Simon will played again, but this time as a solo act on Maui.
Since his retirement, Paul Simon has decided to perform for the benefit of philanthropic organizations occasionally. Tuesday and Wednesday’s performances at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center (MACC) will aid The Auwahi Forest Restoration Project and Kua’aina Ulu ‘Auamo. These charities were chosen as they protect species biodiversity and environmental conservation, two issues important to Simon.
The Maui News recently interviewed Simon about his Maui connection in Paul Simon says ‘a big thank-you’ with concerts in new home.
What’s really incredible about concerts on Maui, is that we don’t always get the big names, but when we do it’s so worthwhile to attend. Not only is it amazing to see who joins the headliner on stage, but sometimes it’s fun to see who’s in the audience. At a recent Michael Franti concert in the Castle Theatre at the MACC, Woody Harrelson was called on-stage to sing, as were all the children in the audience! Now, that’s something that doesn’t happen very often on the mainland.
Nothing like a small venue to bring a close-knit community together. It’s great to catch up with old friends you haven’t seen in a while, or even make some new friends while standing in line for a drink. And, if you keep your eyes open, you may just run into a few famous music lovers who happen to live on island. Just remember to be cool, they live here too and need to enjoy some anonymity.
