Have you ever had a bad real estate experience? Have you ever worked with a less than professional Realtor? I certainly hope not. But, if you have, I hope even more that it won’t color your opinion of all Realtors.
Code of Ethics
Did you know that Realtors are real estate professionals who have chosen to join the National Association and abide by its strict Code of Ethics? What does this mean to you? It means that any Realtor with whom you work has voluntarily agreed to abide by a Code that is all about promoting your best interests and protecting the public. The Code of Ethics spells out our duties to our clients, to the public, and to our fellow Realtors. In essence — it is a detailed document that spells out our professional responsibilities to you! The Code is your assurance of dealing with a professional who has your best interests at heart.
Professional Courtesies
But, there is more. Not only do Realtors abide by a strict Code, but we are also guided by the “Pathways to Professionalism.” These professional courtesies are intended to guide our actions and are at the core of our daily practices.
Professional courtesies are broken into three categories:
- Respect for the Public
- Respect for Property
- Respect for Peers
A key value contained in these professional courtesies is the “Golden Rule.” Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Woven throughout the “Pathways to Professionalism” are also core concepts such as courtesy, trust, professionalism, and respect.
Reputation is Everything
We all know that real estate is a reputation business. What we do today, affects our reputation — and business — for years to come. That is why it is so important for Realtors to walk the path of professionalism.
If you’ve had a bad real estate experience, I am sorry. If you are looking for a great experience in the future, make sure you work with a Realtor who adheres to the Code of Ethics. A Realtor who protects and promotes your best interests. Someone whose reputation is stellar because they walk the path of professionalism. Someone who respects you, your property, and others.
