A true golfer’s paradise, Kailua has several courses to choose from, including Olomana Golf Links, the semi-private Royal Hawaiian Golf Club, and the private Mid-Pacific Country Club (which is frequented by former U.S. President Barack Obama). Nature lovers and birdwatchers can visit Kawainui Marsh, the largest wetland in Hawai’i, or Ka’elepulu Wetland, home to four endangered Hawaiian waterbirds and several migratory waterbirds.

Just a short (and scenic) drive from the hustle and bustle of downtown Honolulu, Kailua has a distinctively laidback vibe. Here, there are no big shopping malls or palatial resorts, but it’s far from a sleepy community.
