The Sky’s the Limit
There’s a reason why Kailua is one of the most coveted spots on O’ahu — and arguably, all of Hawai’i. For one thing, there’s the spectacular scenery: rugged mountains, lush valleys, white sand beaches, and a turquoise ocean as far as the eye can see. And then there’s the undeniable charm of Kailua Town, where it’s easy to settle into the rhythm of island life.
In Hawaiian, Kailua means “two seas” or “two currents.” The number two is a recurring theme here: There are two protected lagoons and two ocean currents that run through Kailua Bay. A pair of islets called the Mokulua Islands (affectionately known as “The Mokes”) sit off the coast. And there are two award-winning beaches, Kailua Beach Park and Lanikai Beach, which have been repeatedly ranked among the best beaches in the world.
Kailua’s reef-protected waters make both beaches ideal for snorkeling, kayaking, bodyboarding, or stand-up paddling. At either beach, you’ll find sunbathers soaking up rays, swimmers completing laps, and kids frolicking in the surf. And with its year-round trade winds, Kailua draws scores of kiteboarders and windsurfers from around the globe.
But Kailua’s appeal extends beyond sea level. The Lanikai Pillbox Hike, also known as the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, is an intermediate-level hike that delivers breathtaking views of the Mokulua Islands, Kailua Beach Park, and Lanikai Beach. If you’re up for a more challenging (and adrenaline-inducing) hike, there’s the extra-steep Olomana Trail, more commonly known as “Three Peaks.” Climbers who reach the top will get the ultimate payoff: Wraparound views of Kailua Bay, Ko’olau Range, and Waimānalo.
On any given day, you’ll see runners, walkers, and cyclists out and about in Kailua. For tennis aficionados, there are courts at Kailua District Park and the private Kailua Racquet Club. A true golfer’s paradise, Kailua has several courses to choose from, including Olomana Golf Links, the semi-private Royal Hawaiian Golf Club, and the private Mid-Pacific Country Club (which is frequented by former U.S. President Barack Obama). Nature lovers and birdwatchers can visit Kawainui Marsh, the largest wetland in Hawai’i, or Ka’elepulu Wetland, home to four endangered Hawaiian waterbirds and several migratory waterbirds.
Just a short (and scenic) drive from the hustle and bustle of downtown Honolulu, Kailua has a distinctively laidback vibe. Here, there are no big shopping malls or palatial resorts, but it’s far from a sleepy community. Kailua Town is packed with an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants (including the crowd-favorite Buzz’s Original Steak House), coffee shops, brew pubs, art galleries, and farmers’ markets.
Kailua has so much to offer — and the same can be said for this oceanfront property. With its postcard-worthy views and proximity to the beach, it’s a dream location for any dream home. Custom home plans are available through Peter Vincent of Peter Vincent Architects, who can be retained for the project.
