I just read your article of March 20, 2017, History of Kahoolawe. It just so happens that I and three other friends visited that island on Dec 6, 1969. It was quite “accidental”. We had rented and aircraft (Piper 160) from Island Flight at Honolulu International Airport and were going to visit the “Big Island” and its volcano for a weekend adventure. But just so happened, that the Piper 160 developed engine trouble (broken exhaust valve #3 cylinder) and were “in need” of an alternate landing site, soon! We had just done a flyby over Kahoolawe and made a 180 posthaste. There were limited landing provisions at the time, which caused extensive damage to the A/C. Our tour was limited, being advised not to explore the area due to live ordnance in the vicinity. To my knowledge (hearsay), the Navy canceled their planned activities that day. However, I did get clearance, per flight plan, to do a flyover that morning. US Coast Guard were on site soon after our
arrival, and evacuated us expeditiously. However, we managed to get a few photos of our stay prior to and departing.

Just a bit of trivia about Kahoolawe.

That’s a great story Kenton. Thank you for sharing. I’d love to hear more about that landing/ adventure:)
I’ve had the privilege of paddling canoe to Kahoolawe multiple times with Hawaiian Canoe Club.
Our first trip was over 100 kids, hiking to Moa Ula Iki with a huge Navy escort with metal detectors. That was 1995.
We have helped replant native forests, built trails and cleaned up multiple areas over the years. We planted a good size wiliwili tree in honor of my late wife when my son was 4 years of age.
Kaho’olawe is very special.
