Maui Weekend Events – August 23

Aloha friends! This weekend on Maui brings us opportunities for cultural learning and appreciation, some comedy and a homecoming concert. HOCVS and the Fairmont present Gathering of the Voyagers this weekend. It will be a whole weekend event. Justin Kawika Young returns to the MACC this Friday night. ProArts Maui delivers two nights of comedy on Saturday and Sunday.

Gathering of the Voyagers

Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Voyaging Society and the Fairmont Kea Lani bring you Gathering of the Voyagers. This will be a 3-day event. Friday morning begins with a blessing ceremony at 6:00 am. The Voyagers arrive Saturday morning at 7:00 am at Polo Beach. Events throughout the day Friday and Saturday include talk story, paddle making demonstration, workshops for ukulele, Hula and Oli/Chant, star navigation talk, a memorial paddle-out for our community, and live music. Sunday’s events include a voyage around Molokini followed by the closing ceremony.

ProArts Maui

ProArts Maui delivers two nights of comedy this weekend. Saturday night features Free Range Comedy. This is an improv troupe specializing in short-form improv a la “Whose Line is it Anyway?” Show starts at 7:30 and seating at 7:00 pm. Sunday night you can catch the Maui Improv Monthly Showcase. Maui Improv is nominated Maui’s best theater company. They present at ProArts Maui the last Sunday of every month. Show starts 7:00 pm. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Justin Kawika Young

The ‘Local Voices’ Concert Series presents Justin Kawika Young. Show is this Friday at 7:30 pm at the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater. Justin Kawika Young returns to tour after leaving home for L.A. to expand his music career. He joined Colbie Caillat’s band and later formed a band in Nashville called Going West with her. This event will be a collection site for the Maui Food Bank. Please bring donations to support our neighbors still affected by the fires last year. Gates open and food and beverage available at 5:30 pm.
