Maui Community Service at its Best

This past Sunday, my wife and I had the privilege of working 14 hours at a special fundraiser. We have been very involved in many fundraisers for Baldwin High school athletics for the past 6 years. We do not have a son playing there anymore because he graduated 2 years ago. We still see the need for the leadership, and direction we can provide in these tough economic times. Having seen the great effects of team sports and high school athletics on my own son, and many of the students we have grown to know so well, we just couldn’t stop when he graduated.

We were approached about 6 weeks ago with an brand new idea for a great fundraiser. Times Supermarket is fairly new to Maui; I believe 1 year. They have a great tradition on the mainland with fund-raising, and wanted to start it on Maui. We were asked to spearhead this because of our experience. Times picked 2 schools to participate with a big game coming up. Times would supply everything we needed except the labor and grills to pull this off. We could not turn down such a great offer.

Times provided us with 1,500 tickets to pre-sell for our chicken bar-b-cue. They provide 1,500 huge 1/2 chickens, which would not fit into the containers because of their size. Green salad with dressing, large cookie, roll, chips, and a soda all for $8. A great value for anyone who purchased it. We got to keep 100% of the profit. Times even provided all the iced water, donuts, and coffee for the cooks throughout the day. Times provided their Sterling Silver steaks also for my cooks at lunch, again no cost to us.  They supplied all this to LahainaLuna High School, also in their Honokawai store. We worked at the Kihei store.

I knew very little about Times until this past month. I will go out of my way now to shop at a store that cares so much about the community, and gives very generously. This will be an annual event for the next 10 years. Times also has donated a huge trophy, called the No Ka Oi Trophy, for the winner of the Baldwin/LahainaLuna game this Friday. Please come and watch a great game, and support our high schools on Maui.

MAHALO TIMES SUPERMARKET  for your HawaiiLife.
