Mary Kerstulovich Introduces “Hawaii Life” to Her Clients on HGTV

The Hawaii Life show on the popular HGTV network is fun to watch, and a great way for dreamers to visualize a home in the tropics from their living rooms at home.

The recently aired show was the second time I had buyers who wanted to film their experience of a home purchase here on Maui. Check out the link here for air times. For Doug and Noranne, they knew Maui was their choice and had narrowed it down to the beautiful South side of the island, long before we began their search. Just like many others from the west coast and even Canada, they had been traveling here for many years and felt it was the right time to make the jump. At the $600k price point, these clients were perfect candidates for the show – they represented similar families that are interested in gravitating towards making lifestyle changes.

When working to bring a home search to live TV, there is a certain level of comfort with the film crew once you get to know them. They spend a lot of time with us as a group and with the buyers to film their love of the island experiences. They also work hard to delve further in – to get a better understanding of how they came down to their final decision and choose this island. It’s fun getting to know your buyers and how they work in front of the camera. Many people inquire… and of course, the home search is typically much more than the 3 homes, but for a 30 min show, 3 is perfect. It’s my job to preview the homes that suit my clients’ criteria and bring them the best possible options and I hope that of the three, they’re good candidates or at least bring them closer to the one they will buy! On the first Hawaii Life episode that I represented clients’ on, we weren’t so successful. Felisha and Andrew didn’t get their offer accepted, but by the time the show aired had found the perfect home for them.

In preparing for filming, there is no hair and makeup so you are who you are on this type of project. For those people who know me, know that it was hard not to want to throw my hair up in a ponytail and show up in shorts!  Many people ask when I am showing them property, how I get on the show. It’s a process that involves interviews with the producers and the final decision is not my call at all. The producers are in the business of making appealing TV and building ratings, and they really like people who are moving here full time with the intention to be working and living here on the island. It’s a refreshing approach and makes for a better island and good TV.

Hawaii isn’t for everyone but when you feel the pull of Maui and it’s strong you will end up here!  Our island lifestyle is ohana, with friendly faces and open arms. I love living here and the lifestyle I’ve created with my family. It’s a beautiful environment where there’s a commonality among the community for a change of pace and reset of priorities. Epic sunny beach days almost year-round, fishing right out of our backyard and not to mention the endless sunsets.

With the vacation rental appeal and growth expected over the next 10 years, it’s an excellent time to invest in your retirement – AND YOURSELF on Maui.
