Over the past few years I showed the Kohala Club Hotel property in Kapaau to several serious buyers looking for B&B or retreat center properties. It had previously been a gentlemanʻs club in plantation days – gently renovated into overnight lodgings by the just past owner, who lived in a separate residence on the 5+ acres. Its mix of hotel, residential and agricultural zoning offered unique possibilities.
Hamakua-Kohala Health, a Community-Based Center for Primary and Preventative Health Care
The Kohala Club Hotel had been in escrow several years ago to Hamakua-Kohala Health, but reportedly fell out of escrow over County/State planning issues. This year the medical group was able to complete the purchase in order to expand their services to the community.

For residents of Kohala (meaning Hawi, Kapaau and nearby towns), Hamakua-Kohala Health center already provides medical services including primary, preventative and acute care, out of a rented, small residential structure near the Kohala Hospital. Sometimes the Amazing Tooth Bus is parked there as well. This saves members of our community the need to travel to Waimea/Kamuela for basic health care.
While they will certainly not turn away those of us with health insurance plans (and their doctors have been uniformly excellent over the years), neither will they refuse to serve those without. This resource is critical to the well-being of a rural community, especially one where the pandemic has created widespread unemployment.

The purchase of the Kohala Club Hotel was completed using a bridge loan provided by Bank of Hawaii. Now Hamakua-Kohala Health needs to raise a total of $1.7 million to retire the loan and renovate the structures into clinic facilities.
