Learn from a Legend
The hotel also offers an opportunity to learn from legendary surfer Bill Hamilton, father and mentor to Laird Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton is hosting open talks every Wednesday at 2:00 pm, giving guests the chance to ask questions and learn more about this thrilling sport. Bill Hamilton is a surfing legend who had a tremendous impact on the sport. Born in California, he was an avid surfer from an early age. Hamilton is known as one of the best surfers of his generation and his contributions to the sport are still felt today. He is a pioneer in surfboard design, as his boards were designed to be more maneuverable and easier to ride. This allowed him to perform tricks that had never been seen before. He is also a master of wave reading and knew how to read the surf conditions to find the perfect wave.
In addition to his surfing accomplishments, Hamilton is an innovator in the surf industry. He is the founder of Hamilton Surfboards, which he started on the North Shore of Oahu in 1967 and his boards are still sought-after today. Having witnessed and participated with nearly sixty years of the surfboard’s evolution, Hamilton is considered a master of his craft throughout the world. As a passionate surfer his enthusiasm for the sport was infectious. He was often seen teaching and inspiring other surfers and was an advocate for the sport, helping to bring it to the mainstream. He is considered to be one of the hundred most influential surfers in the sport’s history.
When I asked him what his crowning achievement was, he told me this story: “When I was eighteen years old, I had been invited to the prestigious Duke Kahanamoku surfing tournament on the North Shore of Oahu, to compete with the best surfers in the world. The meet was held at Sunset Beach in twelve-foot conditions, and I ended up winning my semi-final heat. When I arrived on shore, I was welcomed by the Duke’s business agent, Kimo Wilder Mcvay. Kimo met me at the water’s edge in his business suit and told me someone wanted to meet me, so off we went with sand flowing into his white shoes. As we approached the parking area, I saw the white Limo that belonged to the Duke, his pant leg resting on the ground from the rear seat. Mcvay made the introduction: ‘This is Billy Hamilton, Duke’, and I extended my hand into one of the largest hands I had ever seen. He looked at me straight in the eyes with his wise, older gaze and said, ‘It’s so nice to meet you. You surf like an ocean bird. You and Paul Strauch are my favorites in the tournament – good luck to you.’ I said, ‘Mahalo, it is an honor to meet you.’ I walked from that meeting in a daze; I had just been crowned by the King of Surfing. I will cherish this memory forever.
Adored in Japan, Bill Hamilton is an iconic figure in the surfing world and his contributions to the sport will never be forgotten. He is an innovator and a passionate surfer who helped to bring the sport to the masses. His legacy will live on for generations to come.
