Kamakani Winds Strike the Town of Waimea Kamuela on the Big Island (June 18th, 2012)
On June 17 and early morning on June 18, you literally could hear nothing but a roar of wind cascading down the Buster Brown Hillside in Waimea Kamuela.
Wind Damage
There were almost hurricane force winds as I ran from the house to the car yesterday morning at 4:00 a.m. as I was heading to the airport. I heard many things going on just above my house; it was the falling of about three monster trees during the largest gust.
The winds themselves are called Kamakani (which is also the Hawaii Preparatory Football Team’s name). The high velocity winds took out many of the old Cyprus trees.
The 4:00 a.m. blast was also responsible for the blue truck’s remodel. Keep in mind, the photo with my son standing in front of the tree (He’s 6’2″ tall). Yes, I ran as fast as I could to get into the car because at that moment I wasn’t sure if I was going to be impaled by a tree limb. I was thinking to myself…this is unbelievable. I came back a couple of hours later to see the destruction.

Wow, Diane! I hadn’t heard about the trees in Waimea. thanks for sharing. We had the wind in Waikoloa, too, but didn’t see any damage. Sometimes I think the rain loosens the ground and allows more uprooting. There was evidence of that around Anna’s Pond a few years ago. There is so much more debris there now that it’s hard t hike in…
