Do you love pancakes? Do you live in East Honolulu? If so, you’ve probably had the past pleasure of attending the annual Hawaii Kai Father’s Day Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast. It’s been a popular event for years and the community comes out in force to enjoy great pancakes and great camaraderie. The annual event always draws a crowd and it serves to raise funds for some noble causes. In fact, it’s the Lions Club’s biggest event. It’s been a family tradition for us (and for many) for years. Sadly, due to the pandemic, it’s being canceled. Again.
About the Hawaii Kai Lions Club
The cancellation, though understandable, is really unfortunate. Did you know that the Lions Club provides support and assistance to Kaiser High School, Kamiloiki, Hahaione, and Koko Head Elementary Schools? They also provide manpower and monetary support to the Hawaii Kai Public Library. The Club’s contribution doesn’t stop there, though. They help with health services, including community health fairs, organ donor programs, and vision and hearing screenings. You can even thank the Lions Club for our annual Hawaii Kai Holiday parade.
One of my favorite projects funded by the Lions Club is the Rescue Tube Project. Did you know that Oahu’s east facing shores make Hawaii Kai one of the worst areas in our state for drownings? Rescue equipment makes a rescue safer for anyone attempting to assist a drowning victim. They are easy to use and they are cost effective. Kudos to Eric Kvick who spearheaded this much-needed service. For more information, visit hawaiikailions.org/rescue-tube-project.
The Lions Club is an essential and much-appreciated support to our community. Our keiki benefit, our seniors benefit, as does every age demographic in between. Contributions in time, money, and manpower go a long way to the betterment of our community at large.
