Looking for creative and unusual things to do on the weekend in and around Hilo? This month is filled with Explore Hilo, Volcano and Kalapana while taking part in crafts, tea, yoga, musicals, oceanic navigation, and Halloween treats and masquerade balls.
October Crafternoon– Paper Quilling at The Cooper Center
Saturday October 8th 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Learn the basic techniques to make 3-D quilled shapes. No experience necessary. Supplies and tools provided. Participants will make a quilled card to take home. Open to 10 participants, ages 12 and up.

Community Cup Fundraiser at Volcano Art Center
Sunday, October 8th 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Community Cup fundraiser featuring hand-thrown tea cups and bowls by our local potters, and samples of fine Hawaiʻi grown teas, demonstrations, exhibits and more. Proceeds support ceramics and stained glass programming at Volcano Art Center. Admission is $25 in advance or $30 at the door and includes your choice of one tea drinking vessel, plus samples of brewed Hawaiʻi grown teas to drink!
Embody Love in Action at the fifth annual Hawaii Yoga Festival. Inspired by the writings of Thich Nhat Hahn in his book Love in Action: Writings on Nonviolent Social Change, we will explore the concept of ahimsa and the ways in which yoga, mindfulness and social justice are intertwined. Hawaii Yoga Festival features over 60 sessions presented by a diverse range of faculty from Hawaii and around the world. On-site, full festival and weekend passes include: all classes and activities, three meals a day, accommodations, and access to amenities such as Kalani’s pool and hot tub. Commuter rates are available to pass holders who are staying off-site.

SHOUT! promises to be a fun romp through the sixties with songs like “Georgy Girl”, “These Boots were Made for Walkin’ ” and “To Sir With Love”. Set in London, SHOUT! takes us from 1960 to 1970 chronicling the dawning liberation of women. It was a time when English and American women were redefining themselves in the face of changing attitudes about gender. The soundtrack reflects that change through the unforgettable music of the time. TICKETS: $15 General; $20 Center Reserved. Chicken Skin Obake (Ghost) Stories at KMC Theater in Hawaii Volcanoes National ParkSaturday

Mysteries of Hawai’i presents CHICKEN SKIN 2017 Obake (ghost) stories of Hawai’i featuring Obake stories told by master story teller, kumu, and actor Lopaka Kapanui. Howl’ween Dog Walk is Hawaii Island Humane Society’s annual charity walk. This community event encourages pet owners to exercise themselves and their pets and all are invited to join in costume. Show off your pet costume, join us for games and contests and help HIHS raise funds. Earn $50 in pledges and receive a free Dog Walk t-shirt!
Wayfinding Festival at ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center

Honor the art, science and culture of oceanic navigation at ʻImiloa’s Tenth Annual Wayfinding Festival, sponsored by the Ama OluKai Foundation, on Sunday, October 29, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This year’s theme, Bringing Home Lessons of the Worldwide Voyage, will feature a special panel discussion with crewmembers from the recently completed Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage, along with exciting wa‘a (canoe) activities themed around Hawai‘i’s iconic double-hulled sailing canoe, Hōkūleʻa. Come learn about the epic 3-year journey of Hōkūleʻa, which traveled 42,000 nautical miles, visiting 150 ports in more than 20 countries, while training a new generation of navigators, educators, scientists and community stewards.
